Novolin and Diabetes

Novolin R is a short-acting insulin. When injected subcutaneously, the glucose-lowering effect of Novolin R begins approximately 30 minutes post-dose, is maximal between 1.5 and 3.5 hours post-dose and terminates approximately 8 hours post-dose. The onset of action of Novolin R, when administered intravenously, is more rapid in comparison to the subcutaneous administration. When injected subcutaneously, Novolin R has a slower onset of action and longer duration of action
Novolin R (regular, human insulin [rDNA origin]) is a form of insulin, a naturally occurring hormone, used to control blood sugar in patients with diabetes mellitus. Novolin R is available over-the-counter.

BEFORE TAKING THE NOVOLIN R

You should not use Novolin R if you are allergic to insulin, or if you are having an episode of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Regular insulin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 2 years old. Regular insulin should not be used to treat type 2 diabetes in a child of any age. Tell your doctor if you have ever had: liver or kidney disease; or heart failure. Taking certain oral diabetes medicines while using insulin may increase your risk of serious heart problems. Tell your doctor if you also take medicine that contains pioglitazone or rosiglitazone. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Follow your doctor’s instructions about using insulin if you are pregnant or you become pregnant. Controlling diabetes is very important during pregnancy, and having high blood sugar may cause complications in both the mother and the baby.

WHAT YOU SHOULD AVOID WHEN USING HUMULIN R

Do not change the brand of insulin or syringe you are using without first talking to your doctor or pharmacist. Some brands of insulin and syringes are interchangeable, while others are not. Your doctor and/or pharmacist know which brands can be substituted for one another. Ask your doctor about buying Canadian insulin online.
Insulin can cause low blood sugar. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how Novolin R will affect you. Avoid medication errors by always checking the medicine label before injecting your insulin. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can interfere with your diabetes treatment.

SIDE EFFECTS:

Tell your doctor right away or one of our Pharmacists from our contracted Pharmacy department if you have any serious side effects, including signs of low potassium level in the blood (such as muscle cramps, weakness, irregular heartbeat). This medication can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). This may occur if you do not consume enough calories from food or if you do unusually heavy exercise. Symptoms of low blood sugar include sudden sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling hands/feet. It is a good habit to carry glucose tablets or gel to treat low blood sugar. If you don’t have these reliable forms of glucose, rapidly raise your blood sugar by eating a quick source of sugar such as table sugar, honey, or candy, or drink fruit juice or non-diet soda. Tell your doctor right away about the reaction and the use of this product. To help prevent low blood sugar, eat meals on a regular schedule, and do not skip meals. Check with your doctor or one of our pharmacists to find out what you should do if you miss a meal. Symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) include thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, and fruity breath odor. If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor right away. Your dosage may need to be increased. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
