Obesity In America And What You Can Do To Prevent it

USA Script Helpers

The US obesity prevalence has been steadily increasing over the last few years, with 41.9% of adults in 2017, and this number has since ballooned to an even higher rate as of March 2023.

This is a substantial jump and implies that more than half of adults in America suffer from obesity. With such a large portion of the population struggling with obesity, it’s important to understand what can be done to prevent it.

What is Obesity?

At its core, obesity is simply an excessive amount of fat accumulation within a person’s body composition. While many contributing factors lead to obesity, such as genetics, medical conditions, diet, and lifestyle choices – for the most part, it’s due to consuming more calories than your body needs for energy expenditure.

Why is Obesity So Serious?

Obesity increases your risk for numerous health problems, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and even certain types of cancer. It can also have detrimental effects on mental health due to social isolation and depression caused by the increased stigma associated with being overweight or obese. In addition, obesity comes with a hefty financial cost; direct medical costs associated with treating obesity-related illnesses account for billions of dollars each year!

What Causes Obesity?

It’s easy to point fingers when it comes to obesity, but it’s important to understand what causes it in the first place. Genetics plays a significant role, as do environmental factors like lifestyle choices and access to healthy foods. That said, many other contributing factors include lack of physical activity, stress, hormonal imbalances, and even certain medications.

What You Can Do To Prevent It

The good news is that preventing obesity doesn’t have to be complicated – start by making small changes in your diet and lifestyle today!

Exercise Regularly

We all know that exercise is important for overall health and wellness, but it also plays an important role in helping to combat obesity. Exercise helps burn calories and increases muscle mass, which helps keep your metabolism running smoothly and encourages healthy weight maintenance.

Regular physical activity also reduces stress, boosts energy, and helps improve mood – all of which contribute to better self-care practices regarding eating habits. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week to get started on the road to better health!

Eat Nutritious Foods

The food you eat plays a major role in your overall health and well-being—especially when it comes to managing your weight. The key is to focus on eating nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy products, and healthy fats such as avocado or nuts.

Eating these types of foods will help you get essential vitamins and minerals while keeping calories low so you can maintain a healthy weight without sacrificing flavor or nutrition.

Take approved weight-loss medication

One effective way to tackle obesity in America is to use weight-loss medication such as Saxenda or Jardiance. These prescription medications have been designed specifically for weight management and are approved by the FDA.

They are known to help people lose significant amounts of weight and reduce waist circumference when combined with a healthy lifestyle. Saxenda works by decreasing hunger and promoting satiety while Jardiance lowers blood sugar levels, thus reducing cravings for unhealthy food. Both medications can be used long-term and should be taken as part of a comprehensive plan.

Get Support From Healthcare Professionals

It may seem expensive initially, but getting support from healthcare professionals like dietitians or nutritionists can make all the difference when managing your weight. These professionals are trained to understand how lifestyle changes affect your health and can provide personalized advice about how to incorporate healthier habits into your life.

They may create meal plans for weight loss or increase physical activity levels to achieve lasting results. Don’t be afraid to seek assistance; there is no shame in wanting help along your journey!

Conclusion

Obesity is becoming an increasingly serious issue in the United States—but there are things we can do to help prevent it from spiraling out of control. From advocating for policy changes that promote healthier lifestyles to providing patients with educational resources about nutrition and exercise.  Remember: prevention starts with each one of us!
