FORMS OF BASAGLAR

KwikPen – each mL of sterile solution contains 100 units of insulin glargine. Nonmedicinal ingredients: glycerine, m-cresol, zinc oxide and water for injection. Hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide may have been added to adjust for pH.

USES

Basaglar KwikPen is used to improve blood sugar control in people with diabetes mellitus. Basaglar KwikPen is for use in adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and in children at least 6 years old with type 1 diabetes. Some brands of this medicine are for use only in adults.

BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICATION

You should not use Basaglar Pens or Basaglar Cartridges if you are allergic to insulin, or if you are having an episode of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Basaglar is not approved for use by anyone younger than 6 years old, and should not be used to treat type 2 diabetes in a child of any age. To make sure Basaglar is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: liver or kidney disease; low levels of potassium in your blood (hypokalemia); or diabetic ketoacidosis (call your doctor for treatment). 

HOW DO YOU USE A BASAGLAR CARTRIDGE?

BASAGLAR is injected under the skin of your stomach area, buttocks, upper legs, or upper arms. Just be sure to use a different site each time you inject. Do not use BASAGLAR in an insulin pump or inject BASAGLAR into your vein. Do not change the insulin you use or your dose, unless your doctor tells you to.

SIDE EFFECTS

Basaglar can cause mild or serious side effects. The following lists contain some of the key side effects that may occur while taking Basaglar. The more common side effects of Basaglar can include: edema (swelling) in your legs, ankles, or feet, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level), injection site reactions (pain, redness, itchiness, or swelling around the area of your injection), itchy skin, changes in the thickness of your skin near your injection site, skin rash, infections, such as the common cold, weight gain. STORAGE

• Shelf life after first use: The medicinal product may be stored for a maximum of 28 days up to 30°C and away from direct heat or direct light. Pens in use must not be stored in the refrigerator. The pen cap must be put back on the pen after each injection in order to protect from light.
