BIOTIN
Biotin is a form of vitamin B found in foods. Biotin helps the body break down fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. It has been used in alternative medicine as a likely effective aid in treating or preventing biotin deficiency. Biotin deficiency can be caused by malnutrition, rapid weight loss, long-term tube feeding, and other medical conditions. This has also been used to treat seborrhea (skin rash) in babies. However, research has shown that biotin may not be effective in treating this condition.
Other uses not proven with research have included treating brittle nails or thinning hair, diabetes, nerve pain, and other conditions. It is not certain whether biotin is effective in treating any medical condition. Medicinal use of this product has not been approved by the . Biotin should not be used in place of medication prescribed for you by your doctor.
BEFORE YOU USE THE MEDICATION
You should not use this product if you are allergic to biotin. Before using biotin, talk to your healthcare provider. Your dose needs may be different: if you have kidney disease; if you have had stomach surgery; or if you smoke. Ask a doctor before using biotin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your dose needs may be different during pregnancy or while you are nursing. Do not give any herbal/health supplement to a child without medical advice.
Biotin supplements can cause problems if you take too much. Side effects can include skin rashes, digestive upset, problems with insulin release, and kidney problems. Biotin treatment was said to interfere with laboratory tests and mimic Graves’ disease—a condition that causes the thyroid to produce too much thyroid hormone. As with any supplement, the safety of long-term or high-dose use isn’t known.
STORAGE
Biotin is stable at 100°C in moderately acid or neutral aqueous solutions; the solutions can be heat-sterilized. Solutions above pH 9 are less stable. Moderately acid and neutral solutions are stable several months. Store powder desicated and sealed at 4°C.
POSSIBLE QUESTIONS
WHAT FOOD ARE HIGH IN BIOTIN?
Biotin exists in a wide variety of foods, which helps explain why a deficiency in the vitamin is fairly rare. Foods that are particularly high in biotin include: organ meats, such as liver and kidney, yeast, egg yolks, cheese, legumes, such as soybeans and peanuts, leafy greens, cauliflower, mushrooms, nuts and nut butters. In addition, gut bacteria produce some biotin. Some people take supplements that either contain biotin on its own or in a combination of vitamins.
WHAT OTHER DRUGS WILL AFFECT BIOTIN?
Taking certain medicines can lower your blood levels of biotin, which could affect your biotin dose needs. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using biotin with any other medications, especially: carbamazepine; phenobarbital; phenytoin; or primidone.
Biotin is a B vitamin that plays a crucial role in the metabolism of carbs, fats, and proteins. It supports health in many ways. Biotin deficiencies are relatively rare, but they can cause skin, hair, and nail problems. Pregnant or breastfeeding women may require more of this vitamin. Anyone who has a deficiency can increase their biotin intake by consuming foods rich in the vitamin or taking biotin supplements.
