BRILINTA
Brilinta (ticagrelor) prevents platelets in your blood from sticking together to form an unwanted blood clot that could block an artery. It is used to lower your risk of heart attack, stroke, or death due to a blocked artery or a prior heart attack. This is also used to lower your risk of blood clots if you have coronary artery disease (decreased blood flow to the heart) and have been treated with stents to open clogged arteries.
Brilinta is also used to lower your risk of a first heart attack or stroke if you have decreased blood flow to the heart. It is also used to lower the risk of stroke and death in adults with a blockage or decreased blood flow in an artery that supplies blood to the brain. This medicine is usually given together with low-dose aspirin. Carefully follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Using too much aspirin can make ticagrelor less effective.
USES
Ticagrelor is used along with low-dose aspirin to help prevent heart attack and stroke in people with a history of heart disease, stroke, or at increased risk for heart disease or stroke (for example, due to diabetes, history of transient ischemic attack-TIA). It may also prevent blood clots after certain heart surgeries (such as stent placement).

WHAT DRUGS AND FOOD SHOULD I AVOID WHILE TAKING BRILINTA (TICAGRELOR)?
Drinking alcohol while taking aspirin can increase your risk of stomach bleeding. Avoid activities that may increase your risk of bleeding or injury. Use extra care to prevent bleeding while shaving or brushing your teeth. While taking ticagrelor with aspirin, avoid using medicines for pain, fever, swelling, or cold/flu symptoms. They may contain ingredients similar to aspirin (such as salicylates, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen). Taking certain products together can cause you to get too much aspirin which can increase your risk of bleeding.
WILL I NEED TO USE THIS DRUG LONG TERM?
Brilinta is meant to be used as a long-term treatment. Current treatment guidelines recommend that most people who take Brilinta should be on the drug for at least 6 to 12 months. If you and your doctor determine that Brilinta is safe and effective for you, you’ll likely take it long term.
IS BRILINTA A BLOOD THINNER?
Yes, Brilinta is considered a blood thinner. It’s an antiplatelet drug that works by stopping your platelets from being activated. Platelets are cells that stick together and form clots. So, by stopping the cells from being activated, Brilinta helps keep your blood thin and free of clots.
Brilinta contains the drug ticagrelor. It belongs to a class of drugs called antiplatelets, which are drugs that block the activity of platelets. Brilinta attaches to a protein (called the P2Y12 ADP-receptor) on the surface of platelets. When it attaches to this receptor, it keeps the platelets from being activated. This prevents your platelets from sticking together with other platelets, which lowers your risk of a clot. This can also lower your risk of serious cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes. You should take Brilinta according to your doctor’s or healthcare provider’s instructions.
