BRIMONIDINE P EYE DROPS

 

are used alone or together with other medicines to lower pressure inside the eye that is caused by open-angle glaucoma or ocular (eye) hypertension. This medicine is an alpha-adrenergic agonist. This eye drop is also used to relieve redness of the eye caused by minor eye irritations. The Alphagan P brand of this medicine is available only with a prescription. The Lumify brand of brimonidine ophthalmic is available without a prescription, and is used to relieve eye redness and irritation. Alphagan P is for use in adults and children as young as 2 years old. Lumify is for use in adults and children who are at least 5 years old.

 

BEFORE TAKING BRIMONIDINE EYE DROP

 

You should not use brimonidine ophthalmic if you are allergic to it. Tell your doctor if you have ever had: heart problems, circulation problems; coronary artery disease (clogged arteries); low blood pressure; depression; or Raynaud’s syndrome, Buerger disease.

 

HOW TO USE

 

To apply eye drops, wash your hands first. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. If you are wearing contact lenses, remove them before using this medication. 

 

OVERDOSE

 

If this medicine is swallowed, it may cause injury. Call 911 if someone has overdosed and is experiencing serious symptoms such as passing out or having problems breathing. Otherwise, contact a poison control center as soon as possible.

 

STORAGE

 

Store away from light and moisture at room temperature. Keep out of the bathroom. All drugs should be kept out of reach of children and pets.

 

SIDE EFFECTS

 

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using this medicine and call your doctor at once if you have: eye pain or increased watering; vision changes; or severe swelling, redness, burning, or discomfort in or around your eye. Common side effects may include: mild itching, redness, burning, or other irritation of your eyes, dry mouth, blurred vision; or drowsiness, tiredness.

HOW CAN I STORE THIS MEDICATION?

 

As with most medications, this product should be stored at room temperature. Store it in a secure location where it will not be exposed to excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight. Once opened, the product must be used within 30 days. Any unused portion should be discarded.

 

WHAT ARE THE MEDICAL PROBLEMS WHICH MAY AFFECT THE USE OF THIS MEDICATION?

 

The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of this medicine. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially: Depression or heart attack, history of or heart disease or Orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure when standing up) or Raynaud disease (blood vessel disease) or Stroke, history of o Thromboangiitis obliterans (blood vessel disease). Use with caution. May make these conditions worse. 

 

Brimonidine P eye drops as a solution (liquid) to instill in the eyes. It is usually instilled in the affected eye(s) three times a day. Use brimonidine eye drops at around the same times every day, and try to space your 3 daily doses about 8 hours apart. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use brimonidine eye drops exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of them or use them more often than prescribed by your doctor. Brimonidine P eye drops may control your condition, but will not cure it. Continue to use brimonidine eye drops even if you feel well. Do not stop using brimonidine eye drops without talking to your doctor. Stop using Brimonidine P eye drops if your eyes become swollen, painful, or have a discharge. See your doctor as soon as possible. Follow all directions on your medicine label and package. Tell each of your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all medicines you use.
