Caverject treats erectile dysfunction. This medication is injected into the penis. Should produce an erection in 5 to 20 minutes and the erection should last for about 1 hour. Caverject is a prescription medication used for certain types of erectile dysfunction. Caverject belongs to a group of drugs called vasodilators. These work by relaxing the muscles and blood vessels in the penis so that an erection can occur. This medication comes in solution form to be injected into the penis before sexual activity. You should be shown by a healthcare professional proper technique before self-use. A common side effect of Caverject is penis pain.
BEFORE YOU TAKE THIS MEDICATION
If you have an allergy to alprostadil or any other part of Caverject (alprostadil injection). If you are allergic to Caverject (alprostadil injection); any part of Caverject (alprostadil injection); or any other drugs, foods, or substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had. If you have been told that you are not healthy enough to have sex. If you have a deformed penis, penile implant, or other penile problems. If you have any of these health problems: Polycythemia or thrombocythemia. If you have any of these health problems: Leukemia, multiple myeloma, sickle cell anemia, or other health problems that may raise the chance of painful erection (hard penis) or an erection that lasts for longer than 4 hours. Ask your doctor if you are not sure. If you are a woman. This medicine is not approved for use in women. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take Caverject (alprostadil injection) with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.
HOW TO USE
This medication is given by injection into the penis as directed by your doctor. Before injecting each dose, clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol. It is important to change the location of the injection site with each dose to avoid problem areas under the skin. Therefore, choose an injection site on the other side of the penis from the site of the last dose, using a different area each time. After injection, apply pressure to the injection site with an alcohol swab for about 5 minutes to avoid bruising. Do not use a bent needle to inject this medication. If the needle is bent, replace it with a new needle. If the needle breaks during injection, contact your doctor right away. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. This medication should usually work within 5 to 20 minutes to produce an erection that lasts for about 1 hour. The manufacturer recommends that this medication be used no more than 3 times a week with at least 1 day between each dose. Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the liquid. Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely. Consult your pharmacist. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens (for example, if the drug does not produce an erection or it becomes more difficult to get an erection).
Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of the following signs or symptoms that may be related to a very bad side effect: Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. Redness, lumps, swelling, tenderness, or curving of the erection (hard penis). Irritation where Caverject (alprostadil injection) is given. Chest pain or pressure or a fast heartbeat. Dizziness or passing out. Very bad headache. Shortness of breath. Any unexplained bruising or bleeding. Swelling of the leg veins. Call your doctor right away if you have a painful erection (hard penis) or an erection that lasts for longer than 4 hours. This may happen even when you are not having sex. If this is not treated right away, it may lead to lasting sex problems and you may not be able to have sex.
Store as you have been told by the doctor. Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets. Throw away unused or expired drugs. Do not flush down a toilet or pour down a drain unless you are told to do so. Check with your pharmacist if you have questions about the best way to throw out drugs.
