WHAT IS COLCHICINE?

 

Colchicine oral tablet is a prescription drug that’s available as the brand-name drug Colcrys. It’s also available as a generic drug. Generic drugs usually cost less. It can cause inflammation (pain and swelling) in the joints, lungs, or abdomen (stomach area). It is also used to prevent the symptoms of gout. Gout is caused when a substance called uric acid forms painful crystals in the body, typically in the joints. Colchicine may be used as part of a combination therapy. This means you may need to take it with other medications.

 

WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW PRIOR TO USING THIS MEDICATION?

 

You should not use colchicine if you are allergic to it. Some medicines can cause unwanted or dangerous effects when used with colchicine, especially if you have liver or kidney disease. Your doctor may need to change your treatment plan if you use any of the following drugs: cyclosporine; nefazodone; tipranavir; clarithromycin or telithromycin; itraconazole or ketoconazole; or HIV or AIDS medicine–atazanavir, darunavir, fosamprenavir, indinavir, lopinavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir, or saquinavir. To make sure colchicine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: liver disease; kidney disease; or if you take digoxin, or cholesterol-lowering medications. It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Colchicine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

 

HOW TO TAKE COLCHICINE?

 

Prior to taking Colchicine, be sure to inform your doctor if you have any concerns or if you would like any answers regarding any inquiries that you may have when it comes to your medications. Take this medication by mouth with or without food, exactly as directed by your doctor. Dosing recommendations vary widely and may be different from the following recommendations. Taking more than the recommended dose may not increase this drug’s effectiveness and may increase your risk for side effects. Be sure to speak to your Primary Physician regarding any questions that you may have.

 

Should you be taking Colchicine to help treat gout, carefully follow the directions that your Physician has provided. Remember, this medication works best at the time of first noticing symptoms or signs of a gout attack. The recommended dose is 1.2 milligrams at the first sign of an attack, followed by 0.6 milligrams one hour later. The maximum recommended dose is 1.8 milligrams taken over a 1-hour period. Ask your doctor ahead of time about how soon you can repeat treatment with this medication if you have another gout attack. If you are taking this medication to prevent gout attacks or for pericarditis, ask your doctor about the dose and schedule you should follow. Carefully follow your doctor’s directions.

 

SIDE EFFECTS

 

The more common side effects of colchicine can include: pain in the abdomen (stomach area), constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. If these effects are mild, they may go away within a few days or a couple of weeks. If they’re more severe or don’t go away, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

 

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS

 

Call your doctor right away if you have serious side effects. Call 911 if your symptoms feel life-threatening or if you think you’re having a medical emergency. Serious side effects and their symptoms can include the following: Rhabdomyolysis (muscle damage). This serious syndrome can cause kidney disease, and can be life-threatening. 

 

HOW TO STORE COLCHICINE?

 

Colchicine should be stored between 20 and 25 C (68-77 F). Be sure to keep this medication out of reach of children and pets. Avoid storing this medication in front of direct sunlight.

 

ARE THERE ANY WARNINGS FOR PEOPLE WITH HEALTLH CONDITION?

 

For individuals that are living with liver disease: Your liver processes this drug in your body. If it’s not working well, levels of this drug may build up in your body, raising your risk of side effects. To help avoid this, your doctor may lower your dose of colchicine.
