WHAT IS COUMADIN?
Coumadin (warfarin) is a blood thinner (blood thinner). Warfarin prevents blood clots from forming.Coumadin is a medication that is used to treat or prevent blood clots in veins and arteries, which can lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other significant complications.
USES
This medication is used to treat blood clots (such as in deep vein thrombosis-DVT or pulmonary embolus-PE) and/or to prevent new clots from forming in your body. Preventing harmful blood clots helps to reduce the risk of a stroke or heart attack. Conditions that increase your risk of developing blood clots include a certain type of irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation), heart valve replacement, recent heart attack, and certain surgeries (such as hip/knee replacement).Warfarin is commonly called a “blood thinner,” but the more correct term is “anticoagulant.” It helps to keep blood flowing smoothly in your body by decreasing the amount of certain substances (clotting proteins) in your blood.
BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICINE
Coumadin should not be used if you are allergic to warfarin, have very high blood pressure, have recently had or will have surgery on your brain, spine, or eye, have had or will have a spinal tap or spinal anesthesia (epidural), or are unable to take warfarin on a daily basis.
Coumadin should also be avoided if you have a blood cell abnormality (such as low red blood cells or platelets); ulcers or bleeding in your stomach, intestines, lungs, or urinary system; a brain aneurysm or bleeding; or an infection of the heart lining.
HOW SHOULD I TAKE COUMADIN?
Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking Coumadin. Follow your prescription’s instructions to the letter. Your doctor may adjust your dose from time to time. Warfarin should not be taken in higher or lower doses or for longer than your doctor recommends. This medicine should be taken at the same time each day, with or without meals. Never take two doses at the same time.
COUMADIN SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or dizziness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
MISSED DOSE
For the best possible benefit, do not miss any doses. If you do miss a dose and remember on the same day, take it as soon as you remember. If you remember on the next day, skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up because this could increase your risk for bleeding. Keep a record of missed doses to give to your doctor or pharmacist. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you miss 2 or more doses in a row.
