WHAT IS CUPRIMINE?
CUPRIMINE (Penicillamine) Capsules are used to treat Wilson’s disease (a disease where there is too much copper in the body), cystinuria (a disease where an excess amount of certain proteins are in the urine) and patients with severe, active rheumatoid arthritis who have not had a response to other therapy. Not enough evidence is available to see an effect on treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.
Cuprimine is a chelating agent (KEE-late-ing) that binds to excess copper in the bloodstream and eliminates it. Excess copper in the bloodstream can accumulate in some circumstances, causing tissue damage throughout the body.
USES
Cuprimine is used to remove excess copper in people with an inherited condition called Wilson’s disease. Cuprimine is also used to reduce urine levels of an amino acid called cystine, which can cause stones to form in the kidneys and bladder in people with an inherited condition called cystinuria. Cuprimine is also used to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis after other medicines have been tried without success. This medicine is not approved to treat juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
