WHAT IS CUPRIMINE?
CUPRIMINE (Penicillamine) Capsules are used to treat Wilson’s disease (a disease where there is too much copper in the body), cystinuria (a disease where an excess amount of certain proteins are in the urine) and patients with severe, active rheumatoid arthritis who have not had a response to other therapy. Not enough evidence is available to see an effect on treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.
Cuprimine is a chelating agent (KEE-late-ing) that binds to excess copper in the bloodstream and eliminates it. Excess copper in the bloodstream can accumulate in some circumstances, causing tissue damage throughout the body.
Cuprimine is used to remove excess copper in people with an inherited condition called Wilson’s disease. Cuprimine is also used to reduce urine levels of an amino acid called cystine, which can cause stones to form in the kidneys and bladder in people with an inherited condition called cystinuria. Cuprimine is also used to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis after other medicines have been tried without success. This medicine is not approved to treat juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
Used in the treatment of medical problems such as Wilson’s disease (too much copper in the body) and rheumatoid arthritis. Also, it is used to prevent kidney stones. Penicillamine may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. In addition to the helpful effects of this medicine, it has side effects that can be very serious. Before you take penicillamine, be sure that you have discussed the use of it with your doctor.
If you are breastfeeding, if you have ever had an infection or blood cell damage caused by this medicine, or if you have kidney disease and need this medicine to treat rheumatoid arthritis, you should not use Cuprimine.
