WHAT IS GLUCAGON?
A hormone called glucagon raises blood sugar levels. It also helps digestion by slowing involuntary muscular movements in the stomach and intestines. Glucagon is a prescription drug that is used to treat extremely low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia).
During radiologic (x-ray) tests to determine certain stomach or intestine diseases, glucagon is also used to inhibit stomach movement.
Only use glucagon to treat hypoglycemia if the person is unable to eat, passes out, or is experiencing a seizure. Before you use a glucagon injection, be sure you know how to do so. Hypoglycemia must be addressed as soon as feasible. Low blood sugar over an extended period of time might result in seizures, coma, or death.
This medication is the same as your body’s own glucagon, a natural substance that raises blood sugar by causing the body to release sugar stored in the liver. It is used to treat very low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) that may cause you to need help from others.
To be ready ahead of time, make sure a family member or caregiver knows where you keep this medication and how to use it.Glucagon may also be used before certain X-ray procedures of the gut. It slows down movement of the stomach, intestines, and colon, which may help make the X-ray more clear.
HOW SHOULD I USE GLUCAGON?
Follow your doctor’s instructions for using glucagon. Hypoglycemia must be addressed as soon as feasible. Low blood sugar over an extended period of time might result in seizures, coma, or death.
Glucagon is injected into a vein, muscle, or under the skin. The emergency injections for extreme hypoglycemia will be demonstrated. Each time you use a glucagon shot, contact your doctor.
Any instructions for use that came with your medicine should be read and followed carefully. If you don’t understand something, go to your doctor or pharmacist.
