USES
This combination medication is used with a proper diet and exercise program and possibly with other medications to control high blood sugar. It is used in patients with type 2 diabetes.This product contains 2 medications. Sitagliptin works by increasing levels of natural substances called incretins. Incretins help to control blood sugar by increasing insulin release, especially after a meal. They also decrease the amount of sugar your liver makes. Metformin works by helping to restore your body’s proper response to the insulin you naturally produce. It also decreases the amount of sugar that your liver makes and that your stomach/intestines absorb.Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
WHAT IS JANUMET?
Janumet is a drug that combines metformin and sitagliptin. Oral diabetes medications such as metformin and sitagliptin help control blood sugar levels. Janumet is a medication that is used in combination with diet and exercise to help adults with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar levels.
BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICINE
If you are allergic to metformin or sitagliptin (Januvia), or if you have severe kidney disease, you should not take Janumet.
Tell your doctor if you’ve ever had any of the following things to make sure Janumet is safe for you:
- kidney disease (you may need to have your kidney function checked before and while taking this medicine);
- disease of the liver;
- heart
- problems;pancreatitis;
- high triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood);
- gallstones; or
- alcoholism.
HOW TO USE JANUMET
Take this medication by mouth, generally twice a day with meals, as instructed by your doctor. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, drink plenty of water while taking this medication. The manufacturer advises against splitting, breaking, or cutting the pill before ingesting it. Many similar medications (immediate-release tablets) can, however, be cut or split. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking this medicine.
JANUMET SIDE EFFECTS
If you have signs of an allergic reaction to Janumet (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction, seek medical attention right once (fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling).
OVERDOSE
Call 911 if someone has overdosed and is experiencing serious symptoms such as passing out or having problems breathing. Otherwise, contact a poison control center as soon as possible.
STORAGE
Store away from light and moisture at room temperature. Keep out of the bathroom. All drugs should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
