Latuda is used to treat certain mental/mood disorders (such as schizophrenia, depression associated with bipolar disorder). Lurasidone helps you to think more clearly, feel less nervous, and take part in everyday life. It may also help to decrease hallucinations (hearing/seeing things that are not there). In addition, this medication may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level. Lurasidone is a psychiatric medication that belongs to the class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain.
Latuda comes as a tablet that you swallow. It’s available in the following strengths: 20 milligrams (mg), 40 mg, 60 mg, 80 mg, and 120 mg.
Before You Take The Medication

This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Get medical help right away if you have a fever that does not go away, mental/mood changes, headache, or dizziness. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially drowsiness, dizziness, and lightheadedness. Babies born to mothers who have used this drug during the last 3 months of pregnancy may rarely develop symptoms including muscle stiffness or shakiness, drowsiness, feeding/breathing difficulties, or constant crying. If you notice any of these symptoms in your newborn especially during their first month, tell the doctor right away. Since untreated mental/mood problems (such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression) can be a serious condition, do not stop taking this medication unless directed by your doctor. If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, immediately discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy.

Latuda is in a class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics. (A class of drugs is a group of medications that work in a similar way.) The way atypical antipsychotics work isn’t completely understood. It’s thought that the drugs increase levels of the chemicals serotonin and dopamine in your body. These chemicals help ease symptoms of schizophrenia and the depressive phase of bipolar I disorder.
