DESCRIPTION
Zestril is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in adult patients and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure lowers the risk of fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions. These benefits have been seen in controlled trials of antihypertensive drugs from a wide variety of pharmacologic classes.
Zestril contains the active drug lisinopril, which is available as a generic drug. A generic drug is an exact copy of the active drug in a brand-name medication. The generic is considered to be as safe and effective as the original drug. Generics tend to cost less than brand-name drugs. In some cases, the brand-name drug and the generic version may come in different forms and strengths. Lisinopril also comes in other brand-name medications, such as Prinivil.
USES
ZESTRIL (LISINOPRIL) is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat heart failure and to improve survival after a heart attack. Lisinopril belongs to a class of drugs known as ACE inhibitors. It works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily.
BEFORE YOU TAKE THE MEDICATION
You should not use Zestril if you are allergic to lisinopril, or if you:
Have a history of angioedema; recently took a heart medicine called sacubitril; or are allergic to any other ACE inhibitor, such as benazepril, captopril, enalapril, fosinopril, moexipril, perindopril, quinapril, ramipril, or trandolapril. Do not take Zestril within 36 hours before or after taking medicine that contains sacubitril (such as Entresto).
If you have diabetes, do not use Zestril together with any medication that contains aliskiren (such as Tekturna or Tekamlo). To make sure Zestril is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis); liver disease; or high levels of potassium in your blood. Do not use Zestril if you are pregnant, and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. Lisinopril can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if you take the medicine during your second or third trimester. You should not breastfeed while using Zestril.
HOW TO USE ZESTRIL (LISINOPRIL)
Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. If you are using the suspension form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage is also based on weight. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose.
Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick. For the treatment of high blood pressure, it may take 2 to 4 weeks before you get the full benefit of this medication. For the treatment of heart failure, it may take weeks to months before you get the full benefit of this medication.
