This drug is an antibiotic used to treat inflammation of the bladder (acute cystitis). Macrobid is an antibiotic that only treats bacterial infections. It is not effective against viral infections (such as colds and flu). Using antibiotics when you don’t need them can prevent them from working against future infections. Do not use this medicine in infants younger than 1 month (see also Precautions section). This medicine should not be used to treat non-bladder infections (including kidney infections such as pyelonephritis and perinephric abscess).

How do you use Macrobid

Take Macrobid as directed by your doctor, usually twice a day (every 12 hours), with food. For best results, swallow the medicine whole.

Do not use magnesium trisilicate-containing antacids while taking this medicine. These antacids bind to nitrofurantoin and prevent it from being fully absorbed by the body.

For best results, take this antibiotic regularly. Take Macrobid medicine at the same time every day to help you remember.

Macrobid Dosage

Take Macrobid capsules with food. Adult and pediatric patients 12 years and older: 1 100 mg capsule every 12 hours for 7 days.

Macrobid Side Effects

Nausea, headache, urine to turn dark yellow or brown in color. This is usually a harmless, temporary effect and will disappear when the medication is stopped. However, dark brown urine can also be a sign of rare side effects (liver problems or anemia)

If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Macrobid Storage

Store at controlled room temperature (59° to 86°F or 15° to 30°C). Keep out of reach of children.
