WHAT IS PRADAXA (DABIGATRAN)?

Pradaxa (dabigatran) is an anticoagulant (thrombin inhibitor) that helps prevent the formation of blood clots.

Pradaxa (Dabigatran) is used to lower the risk of stroke caused by a blood clot in people with a heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation. This medicine is used when the atrial fibrillation is not caused by a heart valve problem. Pradaxa is also used after hip replacement surgery to prevent a type of blood clot called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can lead to blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism).

USES

Dabigatran is used to prevent stroke and harmful blood clots (such as in your legs or lungs) if you have a certain type of irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation). Dabigatran is also used to treat blood clots in the veins of your legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism) and to reduce the risk of them occurring again. This medication may also be used to prevent these blood clots from forming after hip replacement surgery. Dabigatran is an anticoagulant that works by blocking a certain substance (a clotting protein called thrombin) in your blood. This helps to keep blood flowing smoothly in your body.Dabigatran should not be used to prevent blood clots from forming after artificial heart valve replacement. If you have had heart valve surgery, talk to your doctor about the best medication for you. Do not stop taking any medication, including dabigatran, without talking to your doctor first.

HOW SHOULD I TAKE PRADAXA (DABIGATRAN)?

Take a full glass of water with this medicine. With or without food, you can take Pradaxa. Swallow the entire capsule without crushing, chewing, pulling or opening it.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Pradaxa: hives; pain or tight feeling in your chest, wheezing, difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Also seek emergency medical attention if you have symptoms of a spinal blood clot: back pain, numbness or muscle weakness in your lower body, or loss of bladder or bowel control.

HOW TO STORE PRADAXA

Store Pradaxa in the original bottle or blister package to protect from moisture. Do not store or place Pradaxa capsules in any other container, such as pill boxes or pill organizers. For Pradaxa bottles: Open only one bottle of Pradaxa at a time.
