DESCRIPTION

RETIN-A (tretinoin) Cream contains tretinoin in either of three strengths, 0.1%, 0.05%, or 0.025% by weight, in a hydrophilic cream vehicle of stearic acid, isopropyl myristate, polyoxyl 40 stearate, stearyl alcohol, xanthan gum, sorbic acid, butylated hydroxytoluene, and purified water.

INDICATIONS

HOW DOES RETIN-A WORK?

Retin-A is a topical medicine available by prescription only that is applied sparingly to the facial skin, sparing the eyelids and the corners of the nose and lips. It works at the cellular level and takes several months to see the full effect. In many ways, Retin-A can be thought of as reversing the outwards signs of aging on the skin.

The earliest effect of Retin-A is that the outer layer of keratinocytes start shedding off, leaving the skin fresher, smoother and more evenly pigmented. The next effect seen is that the epidermal cells start to replicate faster causing the skin to look and feel softer, more robust and healthier. Finally, the collagen bundles in the dermis will thicken and organize, causing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to lessen with time.

Retin-A improves the cosmetic appearance of the skin, but it also helps treat some functional problems of the skin such as acne and precancerous conditions, such as actinic keratoses.

HOW IS RETIN-A USED FOR BEAUTY TREATMENTS?

Typical treatment regimens include a period of tapering up. The topical product is applied sparingly 2-3 nights per week for several weeks and then the frequency is gradually increased until a nightly regimen is attained. A cream or gel delivery system is chosen based on the skin’s underlying dry or oily predisposition and the concentration can be increased over time.

Tell your doctor if you have: heart disease; liver problems, or jaundice caused by pregnancy or taking hormones; kidney disease; gallbladder disease; asthma; epilepsy or other seizure disorder; migraines; lupus; endometriosis or uterine fibroid tumors; hereditary angioedema; porphyria (a genetic enzyme disorder that causes symptoms affecting the skin or nervous system); a thyroid disorder; or high or low levels of calcium in your blood. Using estradiol may increase your risk of cancer of the breast, uterus, or ovaries. Talk with your doctor about this risk. 

HOW TO USE TRETINOIN CREAM

If you’re wondering how to use tretinoin cream, here are some guidelines that help ensure that you get all the benefits.

• Apply Retin-A in a thin layer at night. A small amount goes a long way.
• In the morning, wash your face with a mild facial scrub or rough washcloth. This will help reduce the noticeable flaking.
• After washing, apply a good water-based moisturizer. (Yes, guys, this applies to you, too.) The moisturizer will make the drying effect of the medicine more tolerable.
• If flaking occurs during the day, use a washcloth to remove it and apply more moisturizer, or just apply moisturizer.
• Try using a moisturizer that also contains a sunscreen. If not, apply sunscreen anytime you are in the sun—even for a short amount of time. Tretinoin makes you more susceptible to sunburn.

When you first start using Retin-A, apply it every other night or every third night. The flaking and irritation side effects are usually the worst in the first two weeks of application. As your skin adjusts to the medicine, you can apply it more frequently.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

If you have sensitive skin, common side effects of Retin-A include:

• Red, swollen, blistered, or crusted skin
• Burning, warmth, stinging, tingling, itching, dryness, peeling, or irritation where the medicine is applied
• Changes in skin color (darker or lighter)

Tell your healthcare provider if you experience any of these side effects. You may need to discontinue use as Retin-A should not be used on broken skin.
