Purpose of Rifaximin
Rifaximin is a nonabsorbable broad-spectrum antibiotic used primarily for the treatment of traveler’s diarrhea. It is based on the rifamycin family of antibiotics
Rifaximin Uses
This drug is used to treat diarrhea caused by the common bacterium Escherichia coli (“traveler’s diarrhea”). Do not use Rifaximin if you have a fever or bloody diarrhea. Rifaximin works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It does not work against viral infections (colds, flu, etc.). Using antibiotics when you don’t need them can prevent them from working against future infections. It is also used to prevent brain problems caused by liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy).
How do you use a Rifaximin
To treat diarrhea in a traveler, as directed by your doctor, usually, he should take this medicine by mouth 3 times a day (every 8 hours) for 3 days with or without food.
To treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, he should take this medicine by mouth, usually three times a day for 14 days, with or without food, as directed by a doctor.
Rifaximin Dosage
To prevent hepatic encephalopathy, he should usually take this medicine twice a day (every 12 hours) with or without food, as directed by his doctor.
Take this antibiotic at even intervals for the best results. Take this medicine at the same time each day to help you remember.
Rifaximin Side Effects
This drug rarely causes serious intestinal disease caused by a bacterium called C. difficile. This condition may occur during treatment or weeks to months after stopping treatment. If you experience persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pains/cramps, or blood/mucus in your stool, call your doctor right away.
If you have these symptoms, do not use antidiarrheals or opioids as they may make your symptoms worse. Very severe allergic reactions to this drug are rare. However, if you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as rash, itching/swelling (especially on the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
Rifaximin Storage
Storage. Store the medicine in an airtight container at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
