WHAT IS RISEDRONATE AND IT IS USE
Risedronate delayed-release tablets and tablets are used to prevent and treat osteoporosis (thinning of the bone) in women after menopause. Risedronate tablets may also be used to increase bone mass in men who have osteoporosis, and in men and women to prevent and treat osteoporosis caused by long-term use of corticosteroids (cortisone-like medicine). Risedronate tablets are also used to treat Paget’s disease of the bone. This medicine is available only with your doctor’s prescription. BEFORE YOU TAKE THE MEDICATION
You should not take risedronate if you are allergic to it, or if you have: low levels of calcium in your blood (hypocalcemia); or problems with the muscles in your esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth and stomach). Do not take risedronate if you cannot sit upright or stand for at least 30 minutes. Risedronate can cause serious problems in the stomach or esophagus. You must stay upright for at least 30 minutes after taking risedronate.
HOW TO USE RISEDRONATE
Take this medication by mouth, after getting up for the day and before taking your first food, beverage, or other medication. Do not take it at bedtime or while you are still in bed. Take this medication with a full glass of plain water (6 to 8 ounces or 180 to 240 milliliters). Do not take it with any other beverage. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not chew or suck on it. Then stay fully upright (sitting, standing, or walking) for at least 30 minutes, and do not lie down until after your first food of the day. Wait at least 30 minutes after taking risedronate before you eat or drink anything other than plain water and before taking any other medication by mouth.
Check your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are uncertain about your dosing schedule.
SIDE EFFECTS
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling).
STORAGE
Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.
WHY DO YOU HAVE TO SIT UP AFTER TAKING RISEDRONATE?
Risedronate can cause serious problems in the stomach or esophagus. You must stay upright for at least 30 minutes after taking this medicine. Tell your doctor if you have ever had: This medicine may cause jaw bone problems (osteonecrosis).
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR A RISEDRONATE TO START WORKING?
For osteoporosis, risedronate usually starts to work after 2 weeks. However, it may take 6 months for the medicine to fully protect your bones. When used for Paget’s disease of bone, risedronate reduces bone pain, but it may take 3 to 6 months for your symptoms to improve.
