Rybelsus

Rybelsus (semaglutide) is used with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Rybelsus is usually given after other diabetes medicines have been tried without success. Rybelsus is not for treating type 1 diabetes. Rybelsus is supplied as a white to light yellow, oval shaped tablet and is available in 3mg, 7mg, and 14mg strengths.

Before Taking Rybelsus

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: a certain eye problem (diabetic retinopathy), a disease of the pancreas (pancreatitis), kidney problems, stomach/intestinal disorders (such as gastroparesis, digestion problems). You may experience blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness due to extremely low or high blood sugar. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcohol while using this medication because it can increase your risk of developing low blood sugar. It may be harder to control your blood sugar when your body is stressed (such as due to fever, infection, injury, or surgery). Consult your doctor because this may require a change in your treatment plan, medications, or blood sugar testing. Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products). During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, discuss with your doctor right away the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy. The manufacturer recommends stopping use of this medication 2 months before a planned pregnancy. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Consult your pharmacist or physician.

How To Use Rybelsus

Take this medication with a sip of plain water (no more than 4 ounces or 120 milliliters) as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. Do not take it with any other beverage. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not split, chew or crush the tablet. Wait at least 30 minutes after taking semaglutide before you eat or drink anything other than plain water and before taking any other medication by mouth. For the best effect, you should eat 30 to 60 minutes after taking semaglutide. It is important to take this medication the same way with every dose. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase. Tell your doctor if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse (your blood sugar is too high or too low).

Rybelsus Side Effects

Semaglutide has rarely caused a very serious (possibly fatal) disease of the pancreas (pancreatitis). Get medical help right away if you develop symptoms of pancreatitis, including: severe stomach/abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting that doesn’t stop. Although semaglutide by itself usually does not cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), low blood sugar may occur if this drug is prescribed with other diabetes medications. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the dose(s) of your other diabetes medication(s) needs to be lowered. Drinking large quantities of alcohol, not getting enough calories from food, or doing unusually heavy exercise may also lead to low blood sugar. Symptoms may include sudden sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, or tingling hands/feet. It is a good habit to carry glucose tablets or gel to treat low blood sugar. Symptoms of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) include increased thirst/urination. If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor right away. Your dosage may need to be increased. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

What other drugs will affect Rybelsus?

Rybelsus can slow your digestion, and it may take longer for your body to absorb any medicines you take by mouth. Tell your doctor about all your other medicines, especially insulin or other diabetes medicine. Other drugs may interact with semaglutide, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any medicine you start or stop using.

How does Rybelsus differ from Ozempic?

Rybelsus and Ozempic are both brand-name medications that contain the active drug semaglutide. And they’re both used in people with type 2 diabetes. But unlike Rybelsus which is taken by mouth, Ozempic is taken by injection. Ozempic needs to be injected once a week, while Rybelsus needs to be taken by mouth once a day.

Rybelsus is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Rybelsus may be used alone or with other medications. Rybelsus belongs to a class of drugs called Antidiabetics, Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Agonists. It is not known if Rybelsus is safe and effective in children younger than 18 years of age.
