USE OF SERTRALINE HYDROCHLORIDE

 

Sertraline is used to treat depression, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), and a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual dysphoric disorder).This medication may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may help restore your interest in daily living. It may decrease fear, anxiety, unwanted thoughts, and the number of panic attacks. It may also reduce the urge to perform repeated tasks (compulsions such as hand-washing, counting, and checking) that interfere with daily living. Sertraline is known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by helping to restore the balance of a certain natural substance (serotonin) in the brain.

 

WARNINGS

 

Sertraline should not be used if you are concurrently taking pimozide or being treated with methylene blue injection.
If you’ve recently taken an MAO inhibitor like isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine, don’t take sertraline.

 

BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICINE

 

  • Sertraline should not be used if you are allergic to it or if you are also taking pimozide. If you’re on disulfiram, don’t take this medicine in liquid form (Antabuse).
  • Tell your doctor if you’ve ever had any of the following conditions to ensure sertraline is safe for you:
    Manic depression (bipolar disorder);cardiac disease, hypertension, or a stroke illness of the liver or kidneys; seizures; glaucoma;
  • If you have bleeding difficulties or are on warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), consult your doctor. QT prolongation syndrome; or sodium deficiency in the blood.

HOW SHOULD I TAKE SERTRALINE?

 

Sertraline should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor. Read all drug guides or instruction sheets and follow all guidelines on your prescription label. Your doctor may adjust your dose from time to time.
Take sertraline at the same time every day, with or without food.

 

SIDE EFFECTS

 

If you think you’re having an allergic response to sertraline, seek medical attention right away: Skin rash or hives (with or without fever or joint pain); breathing difficulties; swelling of the cheeks, lips, tongue, or throat Mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, difficulties sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, impatient, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, Changes in vision, pain, redness, or swelling in the eyes; low blood sodium – headaches, confusion, problems thinking or remembering, weakness, unsteadiness; or high blood sodium – headaches, confusion, problems thinking or remembering, weakness, feeling unsteady; or Racing thoughts, heightened energy, unusual risk-taking behavior, intense happiness, irritability or talkativeness are all symptoms of manic episodes.

The following are some of the most common sertraline adverse effects:

  • Indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, and a loss of appetite are all symptoms of indigestion.
