Purpose of Sotalol

Sotalol, sold under the brand name Betapace among others, is a medication used to treat and prevent abnormal heart rhythms. Sotalol is mostly recommended in those patients who have abnormal heart rhythms due to potentially serious side effects. Evidence does not support a decreased risk of death with long-term use.

Uses of Sotalol

This drug is used to treat a severe (potentially life-threatening) rapid heartbeat called sustained ventricular tachycardia. It is also used to treat certain fast/irregular heartbeats (atrial fibrillation/flutter) in patients with severe symptoms such as weakness and shortness of breath. Sotalol can help relieve these symptoms. It slows down your heart rate and helps your heart beat more normally and regularly. This drug is both a beta blocker and an antiarrhythmic.

How do you use Sotalol

Take this medicine by mouth, usually 1 to 3 times a day, as directed by your doctor. You can take it with or without food, but it’s important to decide on one method and take it the same way with each dose.

If you are using the liquid form of this medicine, measure your dose carefully with a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon as you may not be able to take the proper amount.

The dosage depends on the medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage also depends on age and body size.

Use this medicine regularly for maximum benefit. Take it at the same time each day to make it easier to remember.

If you use antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, do not take them with sotalol. These antacids can bind to sotalol and reduce its absorption and effectiveness. To reduce this interaction, separate the administration of these antacids and sotalol by at least 2 hours.

Sotalol Dosage

Sotalol tablets come in different strengths 40 mg, 80 mg, and 160 mg.

The usual dose of sotalol is 80 mg to 320 mg per day. If you have arrhythmias several times a day, your doctor may prescribe a higher dose, up to 640 mg per day.

 If you are elderly or have kidney problems, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose.

Sotalol Side Effects

• Fatigue
• Slow heart rate,
• Dizziness
• Headaches
• Diarrhea
• Decreased sexual performance

If any of these effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

To reduce the risk of dizziness or lightheadedness, get up slowly from a sitting or lying position.

Sotalol Storage
Short-term storage at temperatures between 15 °C (59 °F) and 30 °C (86 °F). Store Sotalol at temperatures between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F).
