WHAT IS TRESIBA?
Tresiba (insulin degludec) is a long-acting insulin that starts to work several hours after injection and keeps working evenly for 24 hours. It is used to lower blood sugar in patients with high blood sugar (diabetes).
USES
Insulin degludec is used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
INTERACTIONS
Drug interactions can alter the way your prescriptions operate or increase your risk of major adverse effects. This guide does not include every conceivable medication interaction. HOW SHOULD I USE TRESIBA?
- Tresiba is injected under the skin, usually once daily at any time of day. A healthcare provider will teach you how to properly use the medication by yourself.
- Tresiba must not be given with an insulin pump, or mixed with other insulins. Read and carefully follow any Instructions for Use provided with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you don’t understand all instructions.
- A dose counter on the injection pen shows your dose in units. Do not convert your dose. Use the U-100 vial for a child whose dose is less than 5 units per day.
- Do not inject Tresiba into skin that is damaged, tender, bruised, pitted, thickened, scaly, or has a scar or hard lump.
- Never share an injection pen with another person, even if the needle has been changed. Sharing these devices can allow infections or disease to pass from one person to another.
- You may have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and feel very hungry, dizzy, irritable, confused, anxious, or shaky. To quickly treat hypoglycemia, eat or drink a fast-acting source of sugar (fruit juice, hard candy, crackers, raisins, or non-diet soda). Be sure you know how to use a glucagon injection kit if your doctor prescribes one.
STORAGE
It is best to refrigerate all unopened insulin products. Unopened insulin degludec may also be stored at room temperature, but it must be thrown away after 56 days. Opened insulin degludec prefilled pens and vials may be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature. Throw away all insulin degludec in use after 56 days, even if there is insulin left. Also throw away all insulin products after the expiration date on the package. Do not freeze, and do not use insulin that has been frozen.
