Purpose of Uloric

Febuxostat, sold under brand names such as Uloric and Adenuric, is a drug used long-term to treat gout caused by high levels of uric acid. Usually recommended only for people who cannot take allopurinol. Medications such as NSAIDs are often recommended first to prevent gout attacks.

Uloric Uses

It is used to lower uric acid levels in patients with gout. Because of the very serious risk of heart disease and stroke with febuxostat (see also WARNINGS section), febuxostat may not be effective in lowering uric acid levels or may have serious side effects when treated with a drug called allopurinol. It should only be used after triggering. Doctor’s Recommendation Not recommended. Use febuxostat only if you have symptoms caused by high levels of uric acid in your blood.

How do you use a Uloric

Take this medicine by mouth, usually once daily, with or without food, as directed by your doctor.

The dosage depends on the medical condition and response to treatment. Take it at the same time each day to make it easier to remember.

Gout attacks may increase several months after starting this drug as the body removes excess uric acid. Your doctor may prescribe medications (such as colchicine, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or indomethacin) to prevent/treat gout attacks during the first few months of taking febuxostat. Continue to take medications prescribed for gout attacks as directed by your doctor.

Uloric Dosage

The recommended starting dose for ULORIC is 40 mg once daily. For patients whose serum uric acid level (sUA) does not fall below 6 mg/dl after 2 weeks, the recommended dose of ULORIC is 80 mg once daily.

Uloric Side Effects

If this effect persists or worsens, consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Remember, this medicine was prescribed for you. Many people using this medicine have not experienced any serious side effects.

Febuxostat can rarely cause serious (and sometimes fatal) liver disease. Your doctor will order blood tests to measure these enzymes. Please adhere to all doctor/laboratory appointments. If you develop symptoms of liver disease, such as persistent nausea, stomach/abdominal pain, dark urine, or yellowing of the eyes/skin, consult your doctor immediately.

If you have any serious side effects such as pink/hematuria, or painful urination, tell your doctor right away.

Uloric Storage

Store the medicine in an airtight container at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
