WHAT IS ULTRAVATE CREAM?

Ultravate (halobetasol propionate cream) includes halobetasol propionate, a synthetic corticosteroid for topical dermatological treatment, in a 0.05 percent concentration. Corticosteroids are a group of mostly synthetic steroids that are applied topically to treat inflammation and pruritus. 

Ultravate cream is used to treat skin swelling and itching from skin conditions that can be treated with a drug called a corticosteroid. (Ultravate itself is a corticosteroid.) Some of the skin conditions that the cream  may be used for include eczema, poison ivy, and hives. Ultravate cream is approved for use in adults as well as children ages 12 years and older.

Ultravate contains the drug halobetasol, which belongs to a class of drugs called corticosteroids. (A class of drugs is a group of medications that work in a similar way.) Ultravate is considered to be a potent (strong) corticosteroid.

Halobetasol is a powerful steroid that aids in the reduction of inflammation in the body. Ultravate (for the skin) is used to treat plaque psoriasis and other skin disorders that react to steroid treatment by reducing inflammation and itching.

USES

This medication is used to treat a variety of skin conditions (such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, rash). Halobetasol reduces the swelling, itching, and redness that can occur in these types of conditions. This medication is a very strong (super-high potency) corticosteroid.

ULTRAVATE SIDE EFFECTS

The more common side effects of Ultravate can include:

• Stinging, burning, or itching of your skin, dry skin, skin redness,
  skin pustules, skin atrophy (thinning), acne or bumps on the skin, skin infection, skin discoloration or lightening
  spider veins and headache.

HOW TO USE ULTRAVATE CREAM?

Apply a thin layer of ULTRAVATE lotion to the affected skin twice daily for up to two weeks. Rub in gently. Discontinue therapy when control is achieved. If no improvement is seen within two weeks, reassessment of diagnosis may be necessary.
