Purpose of Valsartan
Valsartan, sold under brand names such as Diovan, is a drug used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, and diabetic kidney disease. Valsartan belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor blockers. It is useful as an initial treatment for hypertension.
Valsartan Use
Valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure and also used to prolong life after a heart attack. In people with heart failure, it can also reduce the chance of having to go to the hospital for heart failure. It relaxes the blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent/avoid stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems.
How do you use a Valsartan
Take this medicine by mouth, usually 1 to 2 times daily, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. The dosage depends on the medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage also depends on their weight.
If you are using the liquid form of this medicine, measure your dose carefully with a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon as you may not be able to take the proper amount. If the liquid is a suspension, shake the bottle well for at least 10 seconds before each serving.
Use this medicine regularly for maximum benefit. Take it at the same time each day to make it easier to remember. Continue taking this medicine even if you feel well.
Valsartan Dosage
For oral dosage forms (tablets):
Adults – 40 milligrams (mg) twice daily initially. Your doctor can adjust the dose as needed. However, doses are usually 320 mg or less per day.
Children – Usage and dose should be determined by your doctor.
Valsartan Side Effects
Dizziness and lightheadedness may occur as the body adjusts to the drug. If any of these effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
To reduce the risk of dizziness or lightheadedness, get up slowly when standing up from a sitting or lying position.
Remember, this medicine was prescribed for you. Many people using this medicine have not experienced any serious side effects. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects such as fainting, or symptoms of high blood potassium (such as muscle weakness, and slow/irregular heartbeat).
Valsartan can be used to prevent kidney problems or treat people with kidney problems, but in rare cases, it can cause or exacerbate serious kidney problems. See your doctor right away if you have any of the following signs of kidney problems: B. Changes in urine output.
Valsartan Storage
Store Valsartan at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom or in direct sunlight.
