Xarelto

OVERVIEW

Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is a prescription brand-name medication. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it to treat or prevent blood clots in adults in certain situations. Xarelto comes as tablets that you take by mouth. It contains the active drug rivaroxaban. This drug belongs to a group of drugs called anticoagulants, which are also known as blood thinners. Xarelto works by inhibiting (blocking the action of) a blood clotting factor in the body called Factor Xa. It’s currently only available as a brand-name medication.

Xarelto is an approved medication from the FDA. This medication was produced to help reduce the chances of developing blood clots in conditions such as: Afib, DVT and PE. Xarelto also reduces the chance of negative cardiovascular situations.

USES

Rivaroxaban is used to prevent blood clots from forming due to a certain irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) or after hip or knee replacement surgery. It is also used to prevent blood clots from forming in high-risk patients with limited mobility during their hospital stay and after discharge. In addition, rivaroxaban is used to treat blood clots (such as in deep vein thrombosis-DVT or pulmonary embolus-PE) and to prevent the blood clots from forming again. Rivaroxaban is an anticoagulant that works by blocking certain clotting proteins in your blood.

HOW TO USE XARELTO

Take this medication by mouth, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dose is normally taken once a day if you are taking this drug to prevent blood clots following knee or hip replacement surgery, or during a hospital stay and after discharge. If you are taking this medication to prevent strokes and blood clots caused by an irregular heartbeat, you should take it once a day with your evening meal. If you are taking rivaroxaban to treat blood clots, the dose is usually taken twice a day for the first 3 weeks, and then once a day. To lower the risk of blood clots forming again, this medication is usually taken once a day. Carefully follow your doctor’s directions. Do not increase your dose, take it more often, or stop taking it unless you are told to do so by your doctor.

SIDE EFFECTS OF XARELTO (RIVAROXABAN)

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Rivaroxaban can cause you to bleed more easily. Call your doctor at once if you have signs of bleeding such as:

easy bruising or bleeding (nosebleeds, bleeding gums, heavy menstrual bleeding); pain, swelling, new drainage, or excessive bleeding from a wound or where a needle was injected in your skin; any bleeding that will not stop; headaches, dizziness, weakness, feeling like you might pass out; urine that looks red, pink, or brown; or bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds. Bleeding is the most common side effect of rivaroxaban.

STORAGE

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets. Use/discard the crushed tablet mixture within 4 hours.
