WHAT IS BENZACLIN?
This combination product contains two medications: clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide. Clindamycin belongs to the family of medications known as antibiotics. Benzoyl peroxide is a medication that has antibacterial effects and is a peeling agent. This combination product is used to treat certain types of acne. It works by killing bacteria that cause acne and by peeling off skin cells. It may take several weeks to months for your acne to improve. This medication may be available under multiple brand names and or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of this medication may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here.
BenzaClin Gel contains a combination of benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin. Benzoyl peroxide has an antibacterial effect. It also has a mild drying effect that allows excess oil and dirt to be washed away. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that prevents bacteria from growing on the skin.
USE
This combination medication is used to treat a certain type of acne (inflammatory acne vulgaris). It helps to decrease the number of acne pimples. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that stops the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide can also stop the growth of bacteria as well as reduce oil production in the skin, helping keep your pores open.
TIPS FOR USE
- Use a noncomedogenic sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every day, because BenzaClin will make your skin more sensitive to the sun. This means no basking for hours on the beach! You’ll also want to steer clear of tanning beds and sun lamps.
- BenzaClin will bleach fabrics. Wash your hands well after applying your medication. Don’t let your medication come in contact with clothing, towels, pillowcases, etc., until it is completely dry. BenzaClin can also bleach your hair, so take care to keep long hair pulled back and avoid applying too near the hairline.
- Use a moisturizer every day to control dry, flaking skin. Pick one that is oil-free and noncomedogenic.
- While using BenzaClin you should stay away from abrasive scrubs, drying cleansers or soaps, astringents, aftershave, exfoliating products, and medicated makeup. All of these products can exacerbate dryness and irritation of the skin.
- Don’t use any other topical acne treatments on the same areas you’re using BenzaClin unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so. This includes over-the-counter anti-acne cleansers, lotions, or gels.
HOW SHOULD I USE BENZACLIN?
Before using this medication, wash the affected skin gently with mild, non-medicated cleanser, rinse with warm water, and pat dry. Apply a thin layer of this medication to the affected areas of the skin as directed by your doctor. Be careful to avoid your eyes, mouth, inside your nose, and any areas of broken skin. Wash your hands after each use.
Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time(s) each day.
