The Basics of Skyrizi and Why It’s Used for Crohn’s Disease

USA Script Helpers

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can cause symptoms like abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, and diarrhea. There is no cure for Crohn’s, but there are treatments that can help manage the symptoms and prevent flare-ups. One of these treatments is Skyrizi (generic name: risankizumab-qzaa).

Skyrizi is a biologic medication that belongs to a class of drugs called interleukin inhibitors. Biologics are made from living cells and are used to treat a variety of conditions, including Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Skyrizi works by targeting and reducing inflammation in the body.

Skyrizi for Crohn’s Disease

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently expanded its approval of Skyrizi, a biologic drug used to treat Crohn’s Disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. This new approval for Skyrizi provides an additional treatment option for adults with moderately to severely active Crohn’s Disease who have had inadequate response or are intolerant to standard therapies such as corticosteroids.

This new FDA approval is expected to help provide relief for people living with Crohn’s Disease who may not respond adequately to other treatments or are unable to tolerate them due to side effects. The added availability of Skyrizi could reduce the number of flare-ups related to Crohn’s Disease as well as reduce symptoms associated with the condition such as abdominal pain and diarrhea. In addition, it may lead to increased quality of life and improved outcomes among patients living with this chronic condition.

By expanding access to this treatment option, healthcare providers can now provide relief for adults with moderately to severely active Crohn’s Disease who have had an inadequate response or are intolerant to other treatments currently available on the market. Although this expansion will likely result in improved patient outcomes, it’s important that patients discuss any questions they have about their medications and treatment plans with their healthcare provider prior to starting therapy.
