What Is Lantus and How Does This Work?

USA Script Helpers

There is this silent and deadly epidemic caused by a familiar disease that has been killing tens of thousands. That is diabetes. It’s alarming that there are now approximately 34 million people who are living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes in the U.S. Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas is no longer able to make insulin, or when the body cannot make good use of the insulin it produces and has long been the country’s most expensive chronic disease. There are several types of insulin medications available that vary in how quickly and how long they can control blood sugar. Long-acting insulins such as Lantus are also called basal or background insulins. They keep working in the background to keep your blood sugar under control throughout your daily routine.

What Is Lantus and How Does This Work?

Lantus is used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children with diabetes mellitus. Lantus is for use in adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and in children at least 6 years old with type 1 diabetes. Lantus is available only as a brand-name medication. It doesn’t currently have a generic form. A generic drug is an exact copy of the active drug in a brand-name medication. Lantus contains the active drug insulin glargine. Lantus contains the drug insulin glargine, which is classified as a long-acting insulin. Lantus is given as an injection just under your skin (a subcutaneous injection). The drug comes as a solution inside 10-milliliter (mL) vials that hold 100 units of insulin glargine per mL. The vial is used with needles, which aren’t included with the vial. Lantus also comes as a prefilled Solostar pen. Each pen contains 3 mL of drug solution that has 100 units of insulin per mL of solution. Long-acting insulin begins working around four hours after injection and it has the ability to work for up to 24 hours. This insulin does not peak but is steady throughout the day. Examples of long-acting insulin including glargine (Lantus).
