Apidra 100IU/ml comes in a Solution that is used to improve blood sugar control by injecting into diabetics who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus. Apidra 100IU/ml Solution is used by injecting into the skin. This medication is a fast acting form of insulin which controls high blood glucose (sugar) levels. It replaces the insulin that is normally produced in the body. This helps the glucose get into your cells so your body can use it for energy. It begins to lower your blood glucose level within 10-20 minutes of injecting it and the effect can last for 3-5 hours. You will need to learn exactly how, where, and when to inject this medicine for it to be most effective. Lowering blood glucose levels helps reduce the risk of getting any of the serious complications of diabetes such as kidney damage, eye damage, nerve problems, and loss of limbs. Prior to Taking This Medication

Do not take Apidra if you are allergic to insulin glulisine, or should you be experiencing any negative reaction to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Do not give Apidra to any child that is under 4 years old, and should not be used to treat type 2 diabetes in a child of any age. To know if Apidra is safe for you please be sure to inform your doctor if you have ever had one of the following:

  • liver or kidney disease
  • low levels of potassium in your blood (hypokalemia)
  •  diabetic ketoacidosis (call your doctor for treatment)

Be sure to inform your Primary Care Physician if you have pioglitazone or rosiglitazone (sometimes contained in combinations with glimepiride or metformin). Did you know that using various types of Diabetes medications if not monitored can actually cause a negative reaction/be harmful while you are on insulin? Are you planning on becoming pregnant or breastfeeding while taking this medication? Be sure to speak to your Primary Care Physician regarding any inquiries or concerns that you may have regarding this medication. Be Sure to follow your Primary Care Physician’s instructions when taking this medication. Being able to control diabetes is very important during pregnancy, and having high blood sugar may cause complications in both the mother and the baby. 


Inject this medication under the skin as directed by your Primary Physician. Consume this medication 15-20 mins prior to eating or 15-20 mins after.Refrain from injecting this medication into a vein or muscle because very low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) may occur. Because this insulin is fast-acting, do not use the insulin if you are unable to eat within 15 minutes of injection or if you have low blood sugar. Not eating right after a dose of insulin may lead to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Do not rub the area after the injection. Giving insulin glulisine into a vein should only be done by a healthcare professional. Very low blood sugar may result. 

If you are directed to inject this insulin with an infusion pump, read the instruction manual and directions that come with the infusion pump. If you have any questions, ask your health care professional. Avoid exposing the pump or its tubing to direct sunlight or other heat sources. Do not dilute insulin if you are using an insulin pump. This product may be mixed only with certain other insulin products such as NPH insulin. Always draw the insulin glulisine into the syringe first, then follow with the longer-acting insulin. Never inject a mixture of different insulins into a vein. Consult your health care professional about which products may be mixed, the proper method for mixing insulin, and the proper way to inject mixtures of insulin. Do not mix insulin if you are using an insulin pump. 

If you are directed to add a mixing liquid to insulin glulisine before use (dilute), ask your health care professional about the correct way to dilute insulin. Do not change brands or types of insulin without directions on how to do so from your doctor. Do not share your pen device with another person, even if the needle is changed. You may give other people a serious infection, or get a serious infection from them. Learn how to store and discard medical supplies safely. 

Storing Apidra - How to Storage Apidra Safely

Be sure to keep this medication out of reach of pets and children. Do not use Apidra after the expiration date stamped on the label. Keep all unopened Apidra in the refrigerator between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze. Avoid using Apidra if this medication has been frozen. Be sure to contact your Primary Care Physician prior to use if this medication has been frozen or give us a call at our toll free number located below to request to speak to a Pharmacist from our contracted Pharmacy department. What should I avoid while taking Apidra (Insulin Glulisine)?

Be sure to monitor your health as insulin can cause low blood sugar. Do not drive or operate any type of machinery while taking this medication. Always read the directions on the label and/or what your doctor has provided you. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can cause low blood sugar and may interfere with your diabetes treatment. 

Apidra is a prescription medication used to treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Apidra is a fast-acting insulin, which helps control the spike in blood sugar levels after meals. This medication comes in an injectable form and is usually injected just under the skin 15 minutes before meals or up to 20 minutes after starting a meal. Apidra is generally used with an intermediate or long-acting insulin. Common side effects include low blood sugar, redness or swelling at the injection site, and weight gain. Apidra can cause serious side effects, including: Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Symptoms of low blood sugar may include: feeling anxious, or irritable, mood changes, trouble concentrating or feeling confused, tingling in your hands, feet, lips, or tongue, feeling dizzy, light-headed, or drowsy, nightmares or trouble sleeping, headache, blurred vision, slurred speech, a fast heartbeat, sweating, shakiness, walking unsteady 

Very low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can cause unconsciousness (passing out), seizures, and death. Talk to your healthcare provider about how to tell if you have low blood sugar and what to do if this happens while taking this insulin. Know your symptoms of low blood sugar. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for treating your low blood sugar. Talk to your healthcare provider if low blood sugar is a problem for you. Your dose may need to be changed. Serious allergic reactions. Get medical help right away if you have any of these symptoms of a severe allergic reaction: a rash all over your body, shortness of breath, trouble breathing (wheezing), fast pulse, sweating, feel faint (due to low blood pressure), Low potassium in your blood. Your doctor will check you for this.
