Penicillamine is a chelating agent (KEE-late-ing) that binds to excess copper in the bloodstream and eliminates it. Excess copper in the bloodstream can accumulate in some circumstances, causing tissue damage throughout the body. Penicillamine is used to eliminate extra copper in persons who have Wilson’s disease, a genetic disorder.

It is also used to remove unwanted substances from the body. The brand names for this drug are Cuprimine and Depen. A generic version is not available. It can cause severe kidney damage, and it can affect the body’s blood-clotting function, increasing the risk of bleeding. It can also increase the risk of developing an infection. It should only be prescribed by doctors who are trained to use it.
Penicillamine is used to treat joint disease, but exactly how it does this is unclear. It treats kidney and bladder stones, known as cystinuria, by removing a protein called cystine from the body.Penicillamine is used to treat Wilson’s disease (an inherited illness that creates a buildup of copper in the body, which can cause significant symptoms) and cystinuria (an inherited condition which can lead to kidney stones). It also removes arsenic from the body in cases of arsenic poisoning.Penicillamine is a chelating agent.
