Skyrizi for Systemic Therapy vs Phototherapy

A woman consulting for her psoriasis problem

There are a lot of different options on the market when it comes to psoriasis treatments. So, how do you know which one is right for you? In this blog post, we’ll be comparing two popular treatment options: Skyrizi for systemic therapy and phototherapy. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of each so that you can make an informed decision about which treatment is right for you.

Skyrizi as a systemic therapy is an option on the market that has been shown to be effective in treating both mild and moderate psoriasis. It works by targeting a specific protein that plays a role in the development of psoriasis. Skyrizi is injected under the skin and is typically given as two injections four weeks apart. The most common side effects of Skyrizi are redness, itching, and swelling at the injection site.

Phototherapy, on the other hand, involves exposing your skin to ultraviolet light under medical supervision. This can be done either in a doctor’s office or at home with a special lamp. Phototherapy is typically used for people with moderate to severe psoriasis who have not responded well to other treatments. The most common side effect of phototherapy is skin irritation.

The Pros and Cons of Skyrizi for Systemic Therapy or Phototherapy

Systemic therapy involves taking Skyrizi orally, either in pill form or via injection. The main advantage of systemic therapy is that it treats the entire body, not just the affected areas. This means that it is more likely to clear up the psoriasis completely. Additionally, systemic therapy is less time-consuming than phototherapy because you only have to take the medication once per day (or once per week, if you are receiving injections).

However, there are also some disadvantages to systemic therapy. First and foremost, it can have some serious side effects, such as infections, headaches, and diarrhea. Additionally, systemic therapy is more expensive than phototherapy because you have to pay for the medication itself as well as any necessary injections or doctor’s visits.

Phototherapy involves using ultraviolet light to kill the overactive immune cells that are causing the psoriasis. It is typically done 2-3 times per week for a period of 3-6 months. The main advantage of phototherapy is that it has very few side effects when compared to systemic therapy. Additionally, phototherapy is less expensive than systemic therapy because you do not have to pay for the medication itself (although you will have to pay for any necessary doctor’s visits).

The main disadvantage of phototherapy is that it takes longer to see results when compared to systemic therapy. Additionally, phototherapy only treats the affected areas and not the entire body. This means that there is a greater chance that the psoriasis will come back after treatment has ended.

Systemic therapy is more likely to clear up the psoriasis completely but it can have some serious side effects and it is more expensive than phototherapy. Phototherapy has very few side effects but it takes longer to see results and it only treats the affected areas. Ultimately, the decision about which treatment option to choose depends on your individual situation and preferences.

Both Skyrizi and phototherapy are effective treatment options for psoriasis. The best option for you will depend on your individual circumstances and preferences. If you have any questions about which treatment might be right for you, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dermatologist or healthcare provider for more information.
