WHAT IS AZITHROMYCIN?

ZITHROMAX tablets contain azithromycin dihydrate equivalent to 600 mg azithromycin. They also contain the following inactive ingredients: dibasic calcium phosphate anhydrous, pregelatinized starch, sodium croscarmellose, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and an aqueous film coat consisting of hypromellose, titanium dioxide, lactose, and triacetin.

Azithromycin is an antibiotic in the macrolides class. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved azithromycin in 1991.

Like all antibiotics, azithromycin can only fight certain bacteria. For this reason, it is important to talk to a doctor before taking the drug. It is not effective against viral infections or as a pain reliever.

Like all antibiotics, it presents some risks, so it is important to only take it under the guidance of a medical professional.

USES

Azithromycin can fight a wide range of bacteria, including many in the Streptococcus family. It can stop harmful bacteria from growing.

Healthcare providers tend to use this drug to treat mild-to-moderate infections of the lungs, sinuses, skin, and other body parts.

A doctor may prescribe azithromycin to treat the following bacterial infections:

  • sinus infections related to Moraxella catarrhalis or Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • community-acquired pneumonia related to Chlamydia pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, or S. pneumoniae
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) complications related to M. catarrhalis or S. pneumoniae
  • some skin infections related to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, or Streptococcus agalactiae
  • tonsillitis related to S. pyogenes
  • urethritis and cervicitis related to Chlamydia trachomatis
  • chancroid genital ulcers (in males) related to Haemophilus ducreyi
  • certain ear infections in children aged 6 months and over, such as those related to M. catarrhalis

BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICINE

If you are allergic to azithromycin, or if you have ever experienced jaundice or liver issues as a result of taking Zithromax, or if you are allergic to comparable medications like clarithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin, you should not use Zithromax.

If you have ever had liver illness, kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, a cardiac rhythm abnormality, low potassium levels in your blood, or long QT syndrome, tell your doctor before using Zithromax (in you or a family member).

HOW SHOULD I TAKE ZITHROMAX?

Follow your doctor’s instructions when taking Zithromax. Follow your prescription’s instructions to the letter. This medicine should not be taken in bigger or smaller doses or for longer than suggested. For each type of infection, the dose and duration of azithromycin treatment may differ.
Zithromax is an antibiotic that can be taken with or without food.

ZITHROMAX SIDE EFFECTS

If you have signs of an allergic response to Zithromax (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction, seek medical attention right once (fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling).

If you get severe stomach discomfort, watery or bloody diarrhea, fast or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, shortness of breath, or sudden dizziness (like you’re about to pass out), call your doctor right once. Nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored feces, and jaundice are all symptoms of liver disorders (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

If a baby on Zithromax becomes agitated or vomits while eating or nursing, call your doctor right away. Side effects on cardiac rhythm, such as a life-threatening rapid heart rate, may be more common in older persons. Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, and headache are all common Zithromax adverse effects.

STORAGE
